See how we gave our 6 year old Boy’s Bedroom an Update with Simple DIY Board and Batten and a Painted Ceiling
We recently moved our 6 year old boy into a new bedroom to make room for baby number 3, and it desperately needed a makeover! This was one of the only rooms in our 1970’s fixer upper home that we hadn’t really touched yet, other than replacing the flooring from carpet to our Provenza LVP flooring.
You can see what the bedroom looked like BEFORE here –
It was really important to me to make this new bedroom feel cozy and welcoming, since we were kicking him out of his old bedroom.
I also asked for some input from him before starting the design, and his main feedback was that he wanted the room to be BLUE (his favorite color 🙂 ). He mentioned wanting both light blue and dark blue, so we came up with a fun plan to add both colors, with out the room feeling too dark or overwhelming.
Simple DIY Board and Batten
To incorporate the light blue and add some detail to the walls, we added a simple DIY board and batten around the room. I like the look of the skinny boards mixed with the thicker trim. It also helped keep the cost down to use thinner boards – they are 1″ x 2″ x 8′ long boards. We didn’t add a picture ledge around the top but that could easily be added if you’d prefer it.
We used the same light blue paint color for the board and batten, trim, and doors, which is Behr Teton Blue in eggshell.
The paint color for the top half of the wall is Sherwin Williams Alabaster in eggshell.
Another way we made this board and batten more affordable, is we bought 8′ long boards and cut them in half so there was no waste, making the top of the board and batten about 4′-6″ high (including the 6″ base trim).
The boards are spaced out about 12″ apart, but we slightly adjusted them to avoid the outlets.
We also replaced the closet doors in here with by-pass slab doors, and replace the old shoe trim with 6″ high base trim and 4″ high trim around the doors and windows.
Dark Blue Painted Ceiling with Glow in the Dark Star Decals
To incorporate the dark blue, we painted the ceiling with Behr Midnight Blue in flat and I love how it turned out! Our ceilings are only 8′ high, so I was worried a darker color might make the room feel smaller or shorter, but it doesn’t at all. I think the color actually draws your eye up, and it makes the room feel so cozy at the same time.
My son had a few glow in the dark star decals in his old room and loved them, so in this room we went all out and covered the whole ceiling! The glow in the dark star decals are from Tempaper and were so easy to apply to the ceiling. I love how they look like white stars during the day and then also glow in the dark at night. The ceiling looks like a beautiful night sky and we love laying in his bed and staring up at it!
Plaid Beddy’s Bedding Set
The bedding set from Beddy’s really ties this whole room together! I love the mix of patterns and textures and how the bedding works with the other patterns and colors in the room. These sets from Beddy’s are perfect for kid’s rooms too because of the unique zipper feature which attaches the comforter to the fitted sheet. This makes it so easy for my son to make his own bed (just by zipping it up) and it keeps the room looking tidy because the blanket doesn’t end up on the floor every night!
This is our second set and I have been really impressed by them. The materials are soft and comfortable, and they are easy to wash. We’ve had our first set for over a year now and it has held up great. Beddy’s has a ton of different colors and patterns to choose from – check out their website to see more!

More Boy Bedroom Makeover Details
The book shelves on either side of the window were from Ikea. We had them in our office at our last house and repurposed them in here to hold Griffin’s books, toys, guinea pig supplies, etc. They have been great because the lower section hides the mess and clutter and the upper section is perfect for books and his smaller items that he likes to collect, and lego creations that he wanted to display.
My goal for these shelves was to keep them functional for him, and fill them with items he loves and uses (not random decor) but also make them look good!
I found the small baskets on the lower shelves in the Target dollar spot for $5 each and they are perfect for holding small random items that he collects.
I also found some inexpensive glass mason jars at Homegoods and they are perfect for storing other small items that he loves to collect, like marbles, rocks, beads, and coins!
I LOVE the area rug in this room! Griffin said he wanted a “soft and cozy” rug and I can’t think of a better way to describe this one! The shaggy pile is so soft and thick and feels great under your feet. It was also a great price on Wayfair and the checkered pattern is fun mixed with the plaid bedding and striped curtains.
I love adding table lamps in every room – they give off such a nice glow! And it’s a nicer way to wake Griffin up in the morning rather than turning on the overhead lights, haha!
The Black-Out Roman Shades are from Select Blinds. I love how the dark navy blue color (Storm Gray) ties in with the dark ceiling. They are cordless, easy to pull down and push up, and do a great job blocking out all of the light. They were a great price and are great quality!
The curtains are from Target an unfortunately it looks like they don’t sell them anymore. Here is a similar option:
I’m so happy with how this room turned out, and the most important part is that Griffin loves it too!
