How to create a warm and cozy bedroom for winter.
With winter quickly approaching and the weather getting colder by the day (especially here in Colorado!) I’ve been in a major nesting mode and really focusing on making our home feel warm and cozy! The fact that I’m pregnant is probably contributing to that as well, haha. Having a cozy, welcoming home is one of the most important things to me when I’m thinking about decor or designing a space. I’m all about those Hygge feels!
One spot in our home where comfort is really important to me is our primary bedroom. I know that some people prefer light, bright and clean bedrooms, and I actually did try that for a while, but I’m really drawn to darker, moodier vibes in bedrooms. I think the rich colors make it feel so much cozier, especially in the Winter!
Below I’m sharing a few cozy winter bedroom ideas, and sharing links to some of my favorite cozy home decor finds to give your bedroom warm and relaxing vibes.

8 Cozy Winter Bedroom Ideas
1. Incorporate Darker, Richer Colors
I love the feeing of a dark and cozy bedroom in the Winter! The richer colors feel like a warm hug 🙂 I’ve been leaning towards rich jewel tones lately! We recently painted an accent wall behind our bed and I love how it added contrast to the room. The paint color is Sherwin Williams Rosaline Pearl.
If jewel tones aren’t your thing, you can warm up your space with darker neutrals, pops of black, or rich wood tones!
2. Layer your Bedding with Different Textures
The key to creating a cozy bed is adding different layers! Layering different textures adds dimension and gives your bed that cozy “lived-in” designer look. For the cooler months, I typically like to use a duvet with a quilt or knit blanket.
I love simple, neutral, linen duvet covers because they are timeless and you can use them all year round! It’s really easy to mix different accent colors with the linen duvet throughout the year to change up the feel of the room. I also really prefer having a duvet cover verses a comforter because it is easy to take off and wash.

Also don’t skimp on the duvet insert! A fluffy down insert makes a big difference and works all year round as well by keeping you cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. You can also use two thinner duvet inserts to get that fluffy look if you are on a budget!

I love the texture a chunky knit blanket adds and it looks great draped over the foot of the bed.

Or if you prefer a quilt or coverlet, try adding a pop of color or pattern with one layered underneath your duvet.
SHOP QUILTS & COVERLETS:
I also love adding some contrast with darker sheets. This Amazon sheet set is one of my all time favorites! The sheets are so soft and comfortable, come in a ton of different colors, and you really can’t beat the price!

3. Add in Some Cozy Throw Pillows and Blankets
To finish off the bed I like to add a few different types of pillows. I love mixing different patterns and textures for a collected look. The key to mixing pattern is to stick within the same color family, and mix large scale patterns with small scale patterns.
I love these king euros and use them all year long!
I switch up the accent pillows throughout the year. For this cozy winter bedroom I’m loving the mix of neutral textures and the pops of black which ties into the king euros and the other black accents in the room!

This cute plaid throw blanket also ties in with the pillows and works perfectly at the foot of the bed, or would also look cute on a bedroom bench or chair!

4. Use Accent Lighting to Set the Mood
Ditch the harsh overhead lighting and opt for soft accent lighting using floor lamps and table lamps at your nightstands. This is really my preference for lighting throughout our house! I love the relaxing mood that lamps set and rarely turn on our overhead lights unless I’m working on something and really need to see, haha. Good lighting is really the most important piece to creating a cozy atmosphere!
Another bedroom lighting tip – swap out your standard light bulbs with red light bulbs at your nightstand lamps! The red light promotes relaxation and helps prepare your body for a good nights sleep! You could even use these color changing light bulbs if you want to be able to switch back and forth between red light and standard light.

5. Add Soft Area Rugs
Area rugs are a must in a bedroom! They are a great way to bring in some more color and pattern and really ground the bed in the room making everything feel cozier. I love our Amber Lewis x Loloi area rug! It really pulls in the purple accent wall and the different colors in the bedding.
We have a king size bed and the 8’4″ x 11’6″ rug works perfectly with it. For a queen size bed you could get away with using the 7’6″ x 9’6″ rug.

6. Cover the Windows with Darker Drapes or Shades
I recently switched out our light linen drapes for dark charcoal ones for the winter and again love the contrast they add! Drapes can also be another fun place to play around with different colors and patterns.

7. Add Some Color with Seasonal Greenery
Plants and greenery can liven up any room! A simple way to add some pops of green is to add some small bud vases to your nightstands filled with a few sprigs of seasonal greenery or flowers. If you are really feeling in the holiday mood you can add a simple cedar garland to your headboard as well!

8. Make it Personal
Adding a gallery wall behind our bed really pulled the whole room together! I used a mix of thrifted frames for an eclectic feel and love how they are all different but still coordinate with each other! I used gold spray paint and gold rub n’ buff on a few of the frames where the existing finish felt off. The rich gold tones feel so cozy against the purple accent wall. I printed out family pictures for the gallery wall and love being able to see them all each time I walk in our bedroom! If family photos aren’t your thing you could easily print out a collection digital art from Etsy!
