Sharing a few design board ideas for a Primary Bedroom design with neutral colors!
This is my first Sprucing Up Tips Tuesday post!!
A few weeks ago I had mentioned on Instagram that I would like to start sharing more interior design advice … I feel like lately with the new baby I’ve been sharing mostly about babies and pregnancy things … so I offered to take submissions from people looking for design help! If you have a question about how to style a shelf, or how to pull together a whole room, I’d love to help!
I’ll try to share design advice and ideas each Tuesday! I’m hoping that these posts will help give others ideas on how to decorate their spaces as well so I’m trying to keep the topics more broad, while also still helping the original person in need of help!
Again this is the first week sharing this so please let me know if you have any ideas on how to make this better or more helpful to you all for future weeks!
This week I’m sharing tips for someone looking to complete their Primary Bedroom Decor. Read on for more details!

Primary Bedroom Decor Ideas
Primary Bedroom Before Photos:
Here are the Before photos that this person sent in. She had mentioned wanting to keep the existing bed, nightstands, and dresser, but other than that the room is pretty much a blank slate!
The overall bedroom size is 13′ x 14′.
Primary Bedroom Wish List:
Using the existing furniture, this person would like to finish their primary bedroom to help it feel cozy, welcoming and complete. She would like help with adding decor and wall art, and would like to add in a full length mirror. She was wondering if a bench would fit at the foot of the bed.
They are planning to add white shiplap and beams to the vaulted ceiling.
She mentioned that she typically lands somewhere between liking neutrals and color. She tends to like some shades of green (and pink if it’s tasteful and not too feminine for her husband).
Primary Bedroom Floorplan:
Here is a floorplan of the room with how I would lay out the furniture.
I would add an 8′ x 10′ rug (a 9′ x 12′ would work too but felt a little tight).
A small bench would fit at the foot of the bed and leaves about 2′-8″ of clearance space between the bed and the dresser, which is a little narrow (typically you want to leave 3′ clearance for walking) but since it is a bedroom that can be a personal preference on if you’d rather have the bench or the space.
If they’d prefer more space, instead of a bench they could add a small chair to the corner where the plant is.
I would also add some curtain panels at the window, you could add two panels at each side for extra fullness. Even if you don’t need curtains for privacy or light blocking reasons, I love the coziness they add, especially in bedrooms.
Primary Bedroom Design Boards
Below I’ve put together two primary bedroom design board options, with links to the items used!
Option 1 includes some warmer, richer colors, like the rose color at the curtains and the dark greens and teals in the rug.
Option 2 has some lighter, cooler colors like blues and mint greens while still pulling in some black accents.
Because the nightstands are so dark, it helps to add in some more black accents through the room to balance it out.
Another key element to consider when decorating your bedroom, is the bedding! Your bed takes up a big part of the bedroom and is oftentimes the main piece of furniture in the room, so don’t skimp on the bedding!
You don’t need to add a ton of throw pillows, but consider working with a few layers to help the bed look fluffy and cozy (duvet, quilt, bed blanket …).
A good quality duvet insert makes a big difference and is something to consider investing in, while you can save on decorative throw pillows and rotate in different colors for the seasons with them.
I love to keep the main items (like the duvet cover) more neutral so they work year round, and will add color with throw pillows and quilts or throws.
I love both options but would personally pick option 1! I think the shiplap ceiling with beams is going to look great in here too!
