This post shares ideas for Whimsical Holiday Fireplace and Mantel Decor from Wayfair.
I can’t believe how fast Christmas is approaching! I usually have more Christmas decor up by now but I’ve been taking it slow this year, and I’m totally ok with that! I’m keeping it simple this year by only focusing on decorating a few key areas, like the Kitchen, Living Room, and our Fireplace.
The Fireplace Mantel is one of my favorite places to decorate for the holidays because the extra garland and twinkling lights make everything feel so cozy and magical … perfect for our cold Colorado winters! I love leaning into all of the Hygge feels in the winter too, with the fireplace, lights, candles, and all things cozy.
I absolutely loved how our Christmas fireplace mantel turned out last year! My plan for this year was to do something similar, with lots of layers, but I wanted to add in some more color and whimsical touches this year.
Below I’m sharing what I used to pull together our whimsical holiday fireplace decor, with links and tips on how to layer your Christmas mantel garland!

Whimsical Holiday Fireplace Decor
I just love how magical fireplaces are during the holidays! This is definitely my favorite view in the house right now 🙂
The key to creating a show-stopping Christmas Fireplace, is by layering a few different types of garland. Mixing in different textures and lengths creates fullness and drama, without feeling too overwhelming.
To give a whimsical feel, I like to use a few different types of garland – like faux greenery, pom-pom garland, vintage ornament garland, and a string of globe lights. I stuck with mainly gold and blush pink metallics on the both the tree and in the garland so that everything ties together and feels balanced. The gold frames and bottle brush trees on the mantel also pull in those metallics.
I like to hang the garland asymmetrically, so that is is longer on one side, to balance out the stockings on the opposite side. The cream chunky knit stockings are one of my favorite finds this year! I got them on sale for only $10 and was shocked at how nice they are! I mixed in 2 of our older knit stockings with the 3 new chunky knit ones for a cozy and eclectic feel.
Overall this fireplace decor was pretty budget friendly! The art prints on the mantel are very inexpensive digital downloads from Etsy, which I printed off at a local Walgreens. The large gold frame was found while thrifting at a Goodwill (one of my favorite places to shop for frames).
Nice, realistic looking faux garland can sometimes be an investment, but I think it can be worth the splurge sometimes, because you will use it for years to come. I’ve had some of my garland strands for 7 years now and they still look as good as they did when I bought them.
I also like to mix “high and low” garlands together. I almost always pair a nicer, realistic looking garland with a budget friendly filler garland to add some fullness.
How to Layer Christmas Fireplace Mantel Garland
A good Christmas Mantel Garland is all about layers! Below I’m noting the different layers I used here, with links as well (some products are no longer available so I’ve linked similar options).
For reference, our fireplace mantel is about 6′ long. I added the basic faux pine garland, faux cedar garland, and pom-pom garland down the full length of the mantel. To create the asymmetrical look, I then layered on the wispy pine & eucalyptus garland and vintage glass ornament garland on the right side and had it cascade down to the hearth. The globe string lights run the full length of the mantel and then down the right side as well. The stockings on the left help the asymmetrical garland feel balanced.
I use these Command Clips to hang everything. They are easy to place where ever I need them and easy to remove!
