Sharing how I gave our stair risers an update with peel and stick wallpaper, and how to hang peel and stick wallpaper on textured walls!
Wallpaper can be a fun way to add some color, pattern or texture to your space, and using peel and stick wallpaper makes the process quick and easy! We’ve used peel and stick wallpaper multiple times throughout our house and I love the character it adds! I’ve even used the peel and stick wallpaper on textured walls a few times, and it has held up great.
One of the great things about peel and stick wallpaper is that it is removable, so it is a great option for apartments, dorm rooms, and renters, or anyone not looking to commit to permanent wallpaper. It is also much easier to install because the paper is pre-pasted, so you don’t have to deal with adding glue.
Last year I added a colorful Moroccan tile inspired wallpaper to our stair risers, and a coordinating mustard yellow rick rack stripe wallpaper to the breakfast nook walls near the stairs. I loved the look and the color they added, but was ready for a change.
Below I’m sharing how I updated our white stair risers with black beadboard wallpaper, and gave our breakfast nook a new look with grasscloth wallpaper, both from Tempaper.

Using Tempaper Peel and Stick Wallpaper on Stair Risers
When we moved into our 1970’s fixer upper home a couple of years ago, one of the first things we did was update the flooring on the main floor, including these stairs. They were originally carpeted so we removed the carpet and used our Provenza LVP flooring for the treads. I decided to leave the risers white, but soon felt like they needed a pop of color. Last year I added this morrocan tile peel and stick wallpaper to the risers, and loved how they looked, but was ready for a change this year.
For the new wallpaper, I decided to use this black beadboard peel and stick wallpaper from Tempaper. I love how it looks like beadboard, but it was much easier to install and less expensive.
Peel and stick wallpaper is easy to install – you just peel the back paper off, place the wallpaper where you want it on the wall, and smooth it out with at straight edge tool to remove any bubbles. Then use a sharp razor blade (like an exacto knife or utility knife) to trim any excess. You should plan on replacing the blade often to keep the cuts clean. It is easy to remove, adjust, and re-apply the peel and stick wallpaper if you need to.
We have 14 stair risers total (10 at this main stair case pictured and 4 more below as we live in a tri-level home) and I needed 2 rolls to complete this project. 1 roll got me through about 11-12 risers so I barely needed to use the second roll.
This was also a very quick DIY project and probably only took me about 2-3 hours to complete!
I love how these stairs turned out! The black beadboard look adds contrast and depth, and works well with the other black accents throughout the room.
I’m including a link to this stair basket here because I’ve gotten so many questions about it!
Using Tempaper Peel and Stick Wallpaper on Textured Walls
Our main dining space, is this small and cozy breakfast nook. We have added a lot to this space over the past two years, like the DIY built-in banquette seating, and the DIY concrete dining table! Adding the built-in banquette seating gave us a little more room in here because we were able to move the dining table over to fit over the bench (taking up less space than dining chairs on all sides). We can even fit 8 people at this table!
I really wanted to make this breakfast nook space feel warm and cozy, so felt that a darker wall color would be perfect in there. I immediately loved the Tempaper Grasscloth Peel and Stick Wallpaper because I love the texture that it adds. The added metallic pops help the black color to feel not as harsh.
I was able to apply this peel and stick wallpaper on our textured walls (they have a slap brush texture) and it has held up great! There are a couple of spots where it wasn’t sticking as well, so I added some double-sided tape behind the paper and that solved the problem. You can still see some of the wall texture behind the wallpaper but that doesn’t bother me at all. The dark color and grasscloth texture of the wallpaper really helps hid any imperfections on the walls.
If you have textured walls and have been curious about adding wallpaper, I say go for it! It might not be permanent, but it can be a fun and inexpensive way to play around with different colors and patterns in your home, without making a huge commitment.
